The American Heart Association’s ACLS course builds on the foundation of lifesaving BLS skills, emphasizing the importance of high-performance teams. The ACLS course reflects the new 2025 science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

 

Please see training options below:

Option A: ACLS Full Course
  • Classroom training for first time or students with expired cards.

  • Class average 6 hours, with 2.5 hours of pre-course work.

  • Must provide proof of pre-course completion prior to classroom training.

  • CEUs available for most healthcare professions

Option B: ACLS Online Fast-Track
  • Online and in-person hybrid for new or renewing students

  • Must purchase online access from AHA directly - approx. (4 hrs) and instructor-led skills testing up to (2 hrs) in-person.

  • Online access provided in confirmation email by AHA

  • Must provide proof of completion prior to attending skills testing in-person.

Option C: ACLS Update / Renewal Course
  • Classroom training for students with an unexpired card.

  • Class average 4 hours, with 2.5 hours of pre-course work.

  • Must provide proof of pre-course completion prior to classroom training.

  • CEUs available for most healthcare professions​​​

Who should take this course?

  • ACLS is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiac arrest, stroke, or other cardiopulmonary emergencies.

 

  • This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, critical care/intensive care, and surgery such as Physicians, Nurses, and Paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for a job or other requirement. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years. Please contact your employer to ensure that you are selecting the correct course.

The ACLS Instructor-led Training (ILT) Provider course option is led by an instructor in a classroom setting.

ACLS ILT course option includes Video Prework (consisting of 8 interactive video lessons with knowledge checks) students must complete before attending class.

Time

The AHA requires all students taking ACLS to complete the Pre-Course Self Assessment and Precourse Work. Please see below training options:

  • Must provide proof of pre-course completion prior to classroom training.​​

    The AHA requires all students taking ACLS to complete the Pre-Course Self-Assessment and Precourse Work.

  • You can take the exam over until a passing grade is achieved.

Option B - Blended Learning HeartCode® ACLS

Complete the online portion +  hands-on skills session with an AHA Instructor.

Format

Complete the online portion +  hands-on skills session with an AHA Instructor.

HeartCode ACLS is the AHA's ACLS blended learning delivery method. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-guided manner online, followed by a hands-on skills session.

 

Course Completion

The student has a choice of completing a in-hospital and out-of-hospital contextualized track. After completing the online portion, students will attend a structured, Instructor-led hands-on session that focuses on meaningful skills practice, team scenarios, and skills testing. 

Time

The online portion of HeartCode ACLS can be completed in approximately 4 hours.

Time to complete the hands-on skills session varies from 1.5 - 2 hours, depending on the experience of the student.

Key objectives of the ACLS course include:

  • High-Quality BLS: Emphasizing early, continuous high-quality CPR.
     

  • Cardiac Arrest Management: Recognizing and treating cardiac arrest, including the use of defibrillation and medications.
     

  • Post-Cardiac Arrest Care: Implementing specialized care, including respiratory, neurologic, and hemodynamic support.
     

  • Algorithm Application: Applying ACLS algorithms for bradycardia, tachycardia, and arrest rhythms.
     

  • High-Performance Teams: Enhancing team dynamics and communication to improve efficiency and patient outcomes.
     

  • Rapid Assessment: Using a systematic approach to rapidly assess and treat patients with acute coronary syndromes or stroke.

Option C - Classroom ACLS
