The American Heart Association’s BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate breaths and ventilations, and provide early use of an AED. The course reflects science and education from the 2025 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

Option A: BLS Full Course

  • Classroom training for first time or students with expired cards.

  • Class average 3 - 4.5 hours.

  • Must purchase textbook or ebook from AHA 

Option B: BLS Recertification / Renewal Course

  • Classroom training for students with an unexpired card.

  • Class average 2-3 hours.

Option C: BLS Online Fast-Track (Skills Only)

  • Online and in-person hybrid for new or renewing students

  • Must purchase online access from AHA directly - approx. (2 hrs) and instructor-led skills testing up to (1 hrs) in-person.

  • Online access provided in confirmation email by AHA

  • Must provide proof of completion prior to attending skills testing in-person.

Who should take this course

The American Heart Association’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

Ready to take a Basic Life Support (BLS) class?

AHA offers 2 options for how you can get certified in BLS. You can take a full classroom course, a blended learning course (HeartCode BLS + a hands-on skills session training). Choose from the options below.

Option A: BLS Full Course 

Format

Intstructor-led, hands-on class format reinforces skills proficiency

 

Course Completion

The BLS Instructor-led course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both out-of-hospital and in-hospital, with a focus on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics.

Time

  • Full BLS Provider Course takes approximately 3 - 4.5 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing
     

  • BLS Renewal Course takes approximately 4 hours (with breaks) to complete, including skills practice and testing
     

  • Course time based on 1 instructor: 6 students: 2 manikins

Completion Card

BLS Provider Course Completion Card (eCard), valid for two years

Audience

 

This class is ONLY for students taking the class for the first time or with expired certificate.

Option B - Renewal Only

Format

Instructor-led, hands-on class format reinforces skills proficiency

Course Completion

The BLS Instructor-led course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both out-of-hospital and in-hospital, with a focus on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics.

Time

  • BLS Provider Renwal Course takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing
     

  • Course time based on 1 instructor: 6 students: 2 manikins

Completion Card

BLS Provider Course Completion Card (eCard), valid for two years

Audience

 

This class is ONLY for students with an active BLS certification requiring renewal.

Option C - Blended Learning HeartCode® BLS

Complete the online portion + hands-on skills session with an Instructor in class. 

Format

HeartCode BLS is the AHA's BLS blended learning delivery method. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-guided manner online, followed by a hands-on skills session.

Course Completion

The student has a choice of completing a in-hospital and out-of-hospital contextualized track. After completing the online portion, students will attend a structured, Instructor-led hands-on session that focuses on meaningful skills practice, team scenarios, and skills testing. 

Time

The online portion of HeartCode BLS can be completed in approximately 1 to 2 hours.


Time to complete the hands-on skills session varies from 60 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the experience of the student.

Audience

 

Built for healthcare providers and other professionals who need to deliver CPR and core cardiovascular life support with confidence, whether in the hospital or out in the field.

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:​

  • Describe the importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival

  • Apply the BLS concepts to the Chain of Survival. Recognize the signs of someone needing CPR

  • ​Perform high-quality CPR for an adult, a child, and an infant

 

  • Perform chest compression using correct hand placement at the correct rate and depth with chest recoil

 

  • Demonstrate effective breaths or ventilation

 

  • Describe the importance of early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)

 

  • Demonstrate how to use an AED. Perform as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR

 

  • Describe how to relieve a foreign-body airway obstruction for an adult, a child, and an infant

 

  • Describe how to help someone in an opioid-associated emergency

 

  • Describe how to perform high-quality CPR on a pregnant person, including manual lateral uterine displacement, during maternal cardiac arrest

 

  • Describe the drowning chain of survival
